Meet the man behind the pen

Meet Jules
Cartoonist.

Hello, I’m Jules. I’ve been drawing since I was very young, and turned professional in 1999. Here’s how a love of comics and a few classroom doodles became my living.

Have a look at some of my earliest drawings, meet a few school-day characters and find out how I got here.

Where it all began

It started with a comic.

I’ve always been interested in cartoons. Comics such as Whoopee, Buster and Whizzer & Chips helped fuel that interest from an early age.

Like many artists, my first attempts began as doodles. Before long, I was drawing my own comic strips, sending me and my friends off on space adventures.

Before I went professional…

These are some of my VERY early drawings from school, made long before I turned professional in 1999.

Friends, adventures & a plot twist.

My best friend was a constant source of grief: he had a habit of changing his girlfriend halfway through a story! Keeping the comic strips up to date wasn’t always easy.

My first classroom commissions.

Teachers often asked me for artwork. I drew a series of posters for my Geography teacher, won a competition to redesign the school’s CDT (Craft, Design and Technology) logo, and drew a prize-winning entry for the computer magazine Zzap 64.

Learning the craft

From doodles to a diploma.

To develop my skills, I took a four-month home-study course with the Cartoon Academy. It gave me feedback from an experienced professional cartoonist and a chance to hone my drawing.

I passed with merit. It was a step towards turning something I loved doing into a career.

Turning drawings into a living.

After the Cartoon Academy course, I took a short business start-up course. Then came advertising in local directories and a number of weeks drawing at three local shopping malls.

Over the years, I’ve worked with major corporations and on all sorts of projects. From live drawings at weddings and events to personal gifts, business artwork and book illustrations, there’s always something new to draw.

Pricing policy

How I price your artwork.

Most of my work is bespoke, so the price depends on the individual job. Tell me what you have in mind and I can talk you through it.

Some work, such as caricatures and business or wedding stationery, can be priced in advance. Those prices may change with your requirements.

Wherever possible, I’ll give you a set price before starting a project. In some cases I can provide preliminary sketches free of charge; please contact me for details.
